LET STUDENTS BUSY THEMSELVES USING HANDPHONE IN CLASS
As a teacher of SMAK 2 Penabur Jakarta, I’m not skillful in using digital media for teaching and learning English, frankly. This school academic year, we are so excitied that we use digital media in learning and teaching activities. Unfortunately, I have difficulty to operate the digital media since I’m not at the same generation of my students. The advance of technology today is so fast and sophisticated that I don’t know how to catch it up. And of course, it is not only me who feel hard, but also some other teachers who have to teach by celluler phone or laptop, as personal digital assistant. We didn’t use computer, internet, digital media since childhood. Comparing from students now who are familiar in using computer and internet since they were kids. However, I won’t give up to teach because of these problems. I have to be couragous to learn good things including digital media. I dare to change. Why? Let’s see the positive and negative things that make me couragous to use digital media in class.
First of all, we talk about the positive things of digital media. Can we imagine how many trees of pines we need to make papers? According to Patricia Snyder, we need 17 pine trees to make one-ton of papers. One tree can make 16 reams of paper. While one pine tree reach 30-year growth and it brings around $3000 per acre planted. Though we are in digital era, we still use papers for documents, tests and some other materials of school. For example, if our school needs 20-30 reams of papers a month, we need 2 pine tress per month. Per year, we need 2 trees times 12 months equals to 24 trees a year. Can you calculate how many pine trees needed for thousands of schools, thousands of offices in Indonesia, thousands of other institutes in the world? Digital media decreases the number of papers needed. All doccuments, materials, exercises or tasks and tests are uploaded to reach students. They may open their email to get materials and do exercise about it, and the tests too. Young people are ackward to note some subjects, except the lessons which need calculations such as math, physics, chemistry and so on. Students may study wherever and whenever they areif they use digital media. It’s quite efficient for them because they have huge lessons at school, incuding their extracurriculer activities, remedial tests and deepening programs. Digital media will make them busy to learn, instead of playing games. Students are learning. Is it good to support students open cellular phone in the class room?
On the other hand, the using of digital media by students is not easy to control. Teacher can’t check one by one what students are opening on their phones. But it’s still handled when we tell them the limited time they have to read material and do the exercise. It’s better to let them use digital media rather than warn them opening the phone while learning. This negative side is not such big problem that we can’t run the class. That’s why The Principle of SMAK 2 Penabur Jakarta, Mr Hendro Lumbanraja, recommends teachers to educate students by digital media along the proses of teaching and learning.
